Acid Reflux is a digestive disease in which stomach acid or bile irritates the food pipe lining. It is a common condition that features a burning pain, known as heartburn, in the lower chest area, often after eating. Acid reflux occur when the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) fails to close completely. Mainly the LES seals food, and acid that breaks down food, in the stomach. If the LES doesn’t close completely, the stomach acid can travel back up the esophagus. This causes a burning sensation called “heartburn” in the lower chest area, after eating food.
Sometimes if the symptoms of acid reflux occurs frequently, then it can lead to gastroesophageal reflux disease, commonly called as ‘GERD’. If the person experiences symptoms of acid reflux more than twice a week to few weeks, then they may have GERD.
Most importantly as per Ayurveda, Licorice is a strong ayurvedic medicine, used to treat acid reflex. Licorice is also known as “Jeshtamadhu or Yashtimadhu” and “athimadhura” in Kannada. Further several studies proved that, licorice is effective to increase the mucous coating of the esophageal lining, and has natural stomach healing properties, which can help to reduce your acid reflux symptoms.
You can use licorice for acid reflux in two ways. Either by drinking licorice tea, by brewing licorice root or powder in water, then strain and consume it.
