Sweet pumpkin idli or pumpkin steamed dumpling is a traditional recipe from malnad region of Karnataka. Undoubtedly, this is a healthy breakfast recipe, which is prepared using grated sweet pumpkin with rice rava or fine rava. Also you can use idli rava rather than fine rava.  Most important thing is, we can make pumpkin idli or kadubu as sweet or spicy. Here I have shared the pumpkin sweet idli.

Furthermore pumpkin is familiar by the name ‘cheenikayi’ or ” Sihi kumbalakai’ in Kannada language. Usually these pumpkin sweet idli is prepared during the first day of Deepavali or Diwali festival. That means on ‘ Naraka Chaturdasi‘. Further this pumpkin sweet idli is a kids friendly breakfast. Certainly this is one of the easy way of adding vegetables to kids recipe. Because sweet pumpkin is highly nutritious and very healthy for growing kids.  Clearly, it is a rich source of fiber and vitamin A.

Now for sweet version, mix grated sweet pumpkin with fine rava, grated coconut, jaggery with pinch of salt and cardamom powder. Make idli like regular idli. Even more you can also make the spicy pumpkin idli by adding coriander leaves, green or red chilli, coconut and ginger. More over it does not needs fermentation. Usually, this cheenikai kadubu is served with ghee. surely, it is easy to make and tastes delicious.

Sweet Pumpkin idli or Sihi kumbalakai Kadubu is a healthy recipe. This is made from grated sweet pumpkin with fine rava or rice rava, jaggery and grated coconut. It is one of the healthy breakfast. easy to make and tastes delicious. This Sweet pumpkin idli is served with ghee.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup rice rava or fine rava
  • 1 cup grated sweet pumpkin
  • 3/4 cup jaggery
  • 1/2 cup grated coconut
  • 1 tsp cardamom powder
  • pinch of salt
  • 1/2 tsp coconut oil or ghee

Instructions

Method for making sweet pumpkin idli or sihi kumbalakai sihi kadubu:

  • Firstly heat a pan on low to medium flame and add fine rava. Dry roast on a low flame for 5 to 6 mins until you get a nice aroma from rava. Turn off the heat and allow to cool it completely.
  • Mean while peel the skin of the sweet pumpkin and grate it using a grater. Keep it aside.
  • Once the rava mixture is cooled completely, add grated sweet pumpkin. Give it a good mix and cover the lid.
  • Rest this mixture for 30 mins. So that the rava and sweet pumpkin mixture set properly.
  • Now remove the lid and add jaggery to the sweet pumpkin and rava mixture.
  • Similarly add grated coconut, cardamom powder and a pinch of salt.
  • Mix it well using hands by pressing gently. Sweet pumpkin and jaggery releases water content while mixing. so you don't need extra water for mixing. If needed add 2 tbsp of water while mixing.
  • It becomes a whole mass or a dough form. Make medium size balls from the mixture and keep it aside.
  • Meanwhile grease the idli plate or any steaming vessel with little ghee or oil. preferably coconut oil.
  • Now slightly press the sweet pumpkin balls over the idli plate.
  • Heat a idli cooker or a thick bottomed pan over medium flame and add water. when the water starts to boil, place the idli plates and cover the lid.
  • Steam cook this for 15 to 20 mins. Turn off the heat and carefully remove the idli plates from idli cooker. cool this for 2 to 3 mins.
  • Take out pumpkin sweet idlis to a plate. Now the healthy, tasty sweet pumpkin idli or sihi kumbalakai sihi kadubu is ready to serve!
  • Serve this with a spoonful of ghee and enjoy.
