Hayagreeva recipe or Hayagreeva sweet recipe is a simple and traditional sweet recipe. Basically it is prepared from chana dal/Bengal gram, jaggery, ghee and dry coconut, along with crunchy dry fruits & nuts, which is nothing but chana dal halwa.

It is a popular recipe of Karnataka, which is the common recipe during festive season like Navaratri. Especially this rich traditional sweet hayagriva is offer as a naivedhyam to deities. And also this is one of the sweet which is made in South India during Navaratri.

Lets see Hayagreeva maddi is served to which deity?

There is a mythology story behind this sweet Hayagreeva & how it got that name! In Hinduism, Lord Hayagriva is one of 10 avataras of Lord Vishnu, who is worshipped  as the god with human body and a horse’s head, seated on a white lotus. A great devotee named Sri vadirajathirtha of Udupi sri krishna mutt used to offer cooked bengal gram with jaggery to Lord hayagreeva. So the sweet dish prepared using bengal gram & jaggery got the name as “hayagreeva” or “hayagreeva maddi”. In Kannada the mixture of cooked chana dal & jaggery, along with coconut & ghee is called maddi & hence the name Hayagriva maddi. Even today this hayagriva is offered as a “naivedhyam” to god everyday in Sode Vadiraja mutt Udupi & served as a prasadam.

In addition to this, Hayagriva sweet is very rich & tasty dish. Also so simple to make. Most importantly, while making hayagriva, don’t overcook chana dal. It should not be mushy, But looks like hold its shape. After cooking chana dal, drain off the water and slighly mash it & don’t mash it like a paste. It should be half mashed chana dal, but retains its shape. Then melt the jaggery with little water & then add mashed chana dal & stir continuously until thickens. After that add the other ingredients and mix well. Serve this hayagriva with a tsp of ghee to enhance its taste.

Hayagreeva or hayagriva maddi is a traditional sweet recipe. Basically it is prepared from chana dal, jaggery, ghee, along with dry fruits & dry coconut. Usually this sweet is made during festivals like Navaratri. Especially this traditional sweet hayagreeva is offered as a naivedhyam to the Goddess Brahmacharini on the second day of Navaratri. Ingredients

  • ¾ cup chana dal
  • 1 cup jaggery /gud organic
  • 2 tbsp ghee
  • 1 tbsp cashews finely chopped
  • 1 tbsp almonds finely chopped
  • 1 tbsp raisins
  • ½ tsp cardamom powder
  • ¼ cup grated dry coconut

Instructions

  • Firstly, in a pressure cooker add washed chana dal and water. Cover the cooker lid and pressure cook for 5 to 6 whistles
  • Then drain off the water from chana dal and transfer the cooked chana dal to a bowl
  • Slightly mash the cooked chana dal. Don't over mash like a paste & it should be half cooked
  • Take a pan or wok and add ghee
  • As the ghee starts to melt, add chopped cashews and almonds
  • Roast it for 2 mins and then add raisins
  • Further roast everything for a minute and take out the roasted dry fruits to a small bowl
  • Again to the pan, add 1 cup jaggery and 1/4 cup water
  • Stir this for 2 mins until jaggery completely melts
  • Then add cooked chana dal and give a good mix
  • Stir this mixture continuously until it thickens
  • Next add 1 tbsp of ghee and again give a good mix
  • Now lower the heat, and add cardamom powder & roasted dry fruits
  • Mix everything well
  • Finally add grated dry coconut and give a final mix
  • Now the delicious Prasadam Hayagreeva is ready to serve!
