Further, this watermelon rasam is a very famous recipe, developed by Mountbatten Mani Iyer – a well known chef from Chennai. In authentic way, they will use cooked toor dal for making watermelon rasam. But here I have made a slight change and this is an instant rasam without dal.
How to make watermelon rasam
To begin with the making of this watermelon rasam, first we need to cut the watermelon and remove the seeds and peel. Cut in to cubes and blend this mixture to a fine puree. No need to strain it. Then make a seasoning with the spices and add blended puree along with salt, tamarind juice and jaggery & also the main ingredient rasam powder.
Moreover adjust the rasam powder according to the sweetness of watermelon. You can make different variations to this rasam recipe, but this is one such simple way. Watermelon rasam recipe | How to prepare rasam | Rasam recipe without dal
Ingredients
- 1 cup watermelon cut into cubes
- 1 tbsp ghee
- ½ tsp mustard
- ½ tsp cumin
- 1 red chilli
- ½ tsp hing
- 2 to 4 curry leaves
- 2 tbsp tamarind juice
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tsp jaggery
- 1 tbsp rasam powder
- ½ cup coconut milk
- 1 tbsp coriander leaves finely chopped
Instructions
- Firstly, take a small blender and add chopped watermelon. Blend this to a fine puree. Keep this aside.
- Heat a khadai or pan on a moderate flame and add ghee.
- As the ghee starts to melt, add mustard, cumin, red chilli, hing and curry leaves.
- Saute all the ingredients until it splutters.
- Then add the blended watermelon puree. Mix it well.
- Next add water as needed and give a quick mix.
- Keep the flame low and add tamarind juice, salt, jaggery and rasam powder.
- Mix very well and also add coconut milk.
- Now bring this mixture to a boil for 4 to 5 mins, keeping the flame high.
- Finally add chopped coriander leaves and turn off the heat.
- Now the delicious watermelon rasam is ready to serve.
- Serve this flavorful watermelon rasam with hot plain rice, with a dollop of ghee.
