Haalu menasina saaru or milk pepper rasam is a simple and most healthy recipe. This is an age old grandma recipe for cold and cough. It is a rich, smooth, soupy rasam with a blend of black pepper, urad dal and coriander seeds. Very Soothing and comforting food. This milk-pepper rasam is good during winter & rainy season. It is also a good recipe for postnatal care mothers.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp urad dal
  • 1/2 tsp coriander seeds
  • 1/4 cup grated dry coconut
  • 1 tsp ghee
  • 1/2 tsp mustard
  • 1/2 tsp cumin
  • 1 red chilli
  • 1/2 tsp hing/asafoetida
  • 2 to 3 curry leaves
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp coriander leaves chopped

Instructions

Making of Haalu Menasina Saaru/Milk Peeper Rasam:

  • Firstly, heat a pan on moderate flame and add black peeper, urad dal and coriander seeds.
  • Dry roast for 2 to 3 mins. Lower the flame and add grated dry coconut.
  • Roast well for 1 minute and turn off the heat. Allow to cool this mixture. 
  • Transfer all the dry ingredients to a blender and make a coarse powder. Keep this aside.
  • Meanwhile heat a pan on medium flame and add ghee. 
  • Once the ghee is melted up, add mustard and cumin seeds.
  • After that add red chilli, hing and curry leaves.
  • Saute well until it splutters. Then add milk and 1/2 cup water.
  • Give it a good mix and bring to boil for 2 mins.
  • Now add the blended pepper and urad dal mixture.
  • Give it a quick mix. Add water if neccessary.
  • Also bring it to boil for 4 to 5 minutes in a low flame.
  • Next add salt and mix well properly. Simmer for 2 minutes and boil. 
  • Turn off the heat and add chopped coriander leaves. 
  • Now the healthy, tasty milk pepper rasam is ready to serve!
  • Enjoy this rasam with hot rice with a spoonful of ghee.
