Cabbage palya or cabbage stir fry form or Cabbage poriyal recipe is a quick and popular South Indian recipe. It is a famous easy side dish for chapati, where cabbage is lightly sautéed with tempering. Most importantly cabbage is a low calorie vegetable with healthy nutrients. Also feels light on stomach. It’s a kind of comfort food, simple yet delicious.

Further this cabbage stir fry is a quick side dish that you can make with in a few minutes. It hardly takes 10 to 15 mins. The cabbage palya does not need much preparation work & also does not need spices too. But the outcome is super simple and tastes amazing.

In Kannada it is known as Kosu palya or Elekosina Palya. This is served as a side dish with rice or sambar combination. but it also goes well with chapati, poori or roti as poriyal too.

Even more this  poriyal is sautéed with mustard, cumin tempering along with lentils first. Then add the finely chopped or shredded cabbage and cook well. Do not add too much water while cooking cabbage. Just sprinkle little water over the cabbage. Because cabbage itself has a plenty of moisture.

At the end, top with freshly grated coconut. This makes the poriyal more tastier. So always add more coconut for topping. Moreover it’s a no onion no garlic poriyal. If you want you can add onion before adding cabbage.

Cabbage stir fry or cabbage poriyal is a quick and famous South Indian side dish. This is the easiest recipe that you can make with in a few minutes. Cabbage poriyal/ palya/subzi is served as a side dish with rice or sambar combination. Further it also goes well with chapati, poori, roti . Most importantly, cabbage is a low calorie vegetable with healthy nutrients. It's kind of comfort food, simple yet delicious.

Ingredients

  • 1 tbsp coconut oil organic, unrefined
  • ½ tsp mustard
  • ½ tsp cumin
  • 1 tsp urad dal / black gram
  • 1 tsp chana dal
  • pinch turmeric powder
  • green chilli as per taste
  • ½ tsp hing (asafoetida)
  • 8 to 10 curry leaves
  • 1.5 cup cabbage finely chopped
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ tsp sugar (optional)
  • 2 tbsp grated coconut fresh
  • 1 tbsp coriander leaves finely chopped

Instructions

  • Firstly heat a pan on medium flame and add organic, unrefined coconut oil.
  • Once the oil is hot enough, add mustard, cumin, urad dal, chana dal and a pinch of turmeric powder.
  • Saute well until it splutters and the dals get golden color.
  • Next add green chilli as per spice level. 
  • Also add hing (asafoetida) and curry leaves.
  • Again saute for a minute.
  • Now add finely chopped cabbage.
  • Mix everything well and stir fry for 2 mins.
  • Then add salt and again give a good mix.
  • Further sprinkle a little water over the cabbage mixture and mix very well. 
  • Cover the lid and cook for 4 to 5 mins on medium heat until the cabbage cooks well.
  • Now remove the lid and mix it again. Then add sugar (optional) and further mix it once.
  • Likewise add grated coconut and finely chopped coriander leaves.
  • Turn off the heat and finally squeeze a little lemon juice. 
  • Give a good mix once.
  • Now the tasty cabbage poriyal or cabbage palya is ready to serve.
  • Enjoy this cabbage poriyal as a side dish with chapati, poori, roti or dosa. Also goes well with plain rice.
